The leading noise reduction method for supersonic jets has been the mixer-ejector. It entrains ambient air and mixes it with the core exhaust inside a shroud, resulting in reduced jet velocity at the shroud exit.  The acoustic benefit is very good  but the device can get heavy and complex.  Some information on the mixer-ejector can be found on this NASA website (from which the above picture was downloaded).
