Mach Wave Elimination
A new method for quieting
high-speed jets
(U.S. Patents 5590520 and 5916127)
COMPARISON
TO OTHER METHODS The leading noise reduction method for supersonic jets has been the mixer-ejector. It entrains ambient air and mixes it with the core exhaust inside a shroud, resulting in reduced jet velocity at the shroud exit. The acoustic benefit is very good but the device can get heavy and complex. Some information on the mixer-ejector can be found on this NASA website (from which the above picture was downloaded).
