MIXING ENHANCEMENT USING AXIAL FLOW
Simulation of thermal signature reduction
Shown below are axial progressions of y-z PLIF cuts in Mach 1.5, 2D jets. The top jet has a sonic secondary parallel flow issuing from a convergent nozzle (reference case). The bottom jet has a sonic secondary parallel flow issuing from a convergent-divergent nozzle. It is seen that MESPI cuts the potential core region by roughly one half and causes a rapid decline in fluorescence signal. There is a rough analogy between the distribution of a scalar (in this case the fluorescent tracer) and the distribution of total temperature in a compressible jet.
