The flow instability associated with MEAF was discovered in 1996 during coaxial jet noise experiments at UCI, sponsored by NASA Langley Research Center. Since then, hundreds of experiments (thousands of individual runs) on MEAF have been conducted at UCI. This section describes the facility used in the axisymmetric tests and shows samples of the results.
In 1998, coannular jet experiments at NASA Glenn Research Center, conducted by Dr. K.B.M.Q. Zaman, verified this instability phenomenon. The NASA tests used nozzles three times the size of the UCI nozzles.
